WHAT IS SEXUAL VIOLENCE?


Sexual violence is a variety of sexual acts committed against a person’s free will which include, but are not limited to, rape and sexual assault.

Often times abusers will use a combination of threats, coercion and intimidation in hopes to silence their victim(s). Remember that abusers will often blame the victim(s) in hopes to convince him/her that the fault lies within them. IT IS NEVER THE VICTIMS FAULT!

DATE RAPE DRUGS

These drugs are often times secretly slipped into a victim’s drink. These drugs are odorless, colorless and often time tasteless. They increase the risk of a sexual violation due to the effects of these dangerous drugs.

  • Common Date Rape Drugs
  • Gamma-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB) also known as: liquid E, Easy Lay, Cherry Meth, Salty Water
  • Rohypnol also known as: Roofies, Rope, Roach, and “The Forget Pill.”
  • Ketamine also known as: Special K, Vitamin K, and K
  • Ecstasy also known as: E, X, Lover’s pill, Stacy pill

Common Effects:

  • Loss of memory
  • Drowsiness
  • Dizziness
  • Slurred speech
  • Loss of inhibition
  • Muscle relaxation/impaired motor function
  • Loss of gag reflex (GHB)
  • Coma and in some cases death


WHAT TO DO IF YOU OR SOMEBODY YOU KNOW HAS BEEN SEXUALLY VIOLATED?

  • Never blame yourself. You are a victim of a violent crime.
  • Seek a safe place
  • Seek medical attention to:
  1. Tend to physical injuries
  2. Avoid pregnancy from the victimization
  3. Prevent STD’s
  • Preserve evidence for future prosecution
    (It is important that a victim does not bathe or shower after an assault to increase the likelihood of preserved DNA evidence)

LEGAL RIGHTS FOR SURVIVORS OF SEXUAL VIOLENCE YOU:

  • Have the right to report the attack to law enforcement agency
  • Have the right to NOT report a rape
  • Seek help and support from:
    1. A friend or family member
    2. Haven advocate
    3. Counselors
    4. Rape crisis line


  • Have the right to file a civil suit against the attacker
  • Have the right to apply for restitution from the Victims of Violent Crime compensation fund


FACTS ON SEXUAL VIOLENCE

  • It is estimated that 302,100 women and 92,700men are raped in the U.S.
  • Only 10% of rapes are reported (1of 10)
  • In 3 of 4 incidents of rape/sexual assault the victim will have known their perpetrator
  • Adolescents (under the age of18)tend to represent the majority of victims in reported cases of forcible fondling (84%), sodomy (79%), and sexual assault with an object (75%)
  • 80%-90% of violent crimes against women are committed by someone of the same ethnic background
